Apple VPP operating instructions
This document describes operations related to the Apple Volume Purchase Programme with the EMM service. The operations include registering devices to the VPP program, retiring devices, associating and disassociating VPP licenses, and creating applications.
The EMM service sends the actual VPP invitations through MDM. Email invitations are currently not supported. Invitations are automatically sent to devices that are registered to the Volume Purchase Programme. They are sent every time the devices connect to the EMM service until the user accepts the invitation. To disable automatic invitations for a device, simply retire it from VPP.
Registering Devices to VPP
There are two possible ways to register a device to the Volume Purchase Programme.
- Enable VPP registration in a device template (recommended when possible)
- Register existing device with VPP.
Enabling VPP in a Device Template
VPP registration can be enabled by editing device template and selecting Volume Purchase Programme tab and enabling Invite to Volume Purchase Programme checkbox.
When VPP invitation is enabled for a device template, all devices created using this template are automatically registered to the Volume Purchase Programme.
Register existing device to VPP
Existing devices can be registered to the Volume Purchase Programme by editing them, selecting Volume Purchase Programme tab and clicking the Register VPP user button.
After device has been registered, all relevant VPP information, like associated licenses, is shown here.
Existing, registered device can be retired by pressing the Retire button. Be careful, device will be retired immediately after confirmation dialog (whether you save the device or not).
Installing VPP licensed applications and books
Installing VPP licensed applications and books is just as easy as installing normal applications to devices. There are two possible options:
- Editing device template, selecting Application installs tab and choosing applications for automatic installation to devices created using this template.
- Manually installing applications to devices in Devices / Inventory view in user interface
VPP license will be automatically assigned to a device when requesting installation of VPP licensed application or book.
There is no need to wait for user to accept the invitation to Volume Purchase Programme before requesting application installations. mySync server takes care of postponing all install operations until user has accepted the invitation. Please note that there is always at least a 15 minute delay in all VPP licensed application installations to make sure Apple VPP service has completed the license association request before install operation is performed on device.
All VPP install tasks in device's task queue are in state Waiting for Condition: VPP association until user has accepted the VPP invitation.
