Preferences: Web UI Tab
The Web UI tab in user preferences has settings for configuring the user interface of the self-service portal. It also shows information about recent logins to the self-service portal.
Note
The tab has the following sections:
Login Settings
In this section, you can set how incorrect logins should be handled.
The fields are as follows:
Incorrect login threshold
The setting determines how many times you can enter a wrong password (consecutively) before the account is locked. A low number may cause unintended lockout if you mistype or forget your password and re-enter it badly. A large number can give an unauthorised user more attempts to guess the password correctly. Recommended values are between 3 to 10.
If you enter a wrong password too many time, and then finally the correct one, a lockout message is displayed:
Once locked out, you need to wait until the lockout period passes. An organisation manager or other administrator can unlock the account on request.
Incorrect login lockout time (minutes)
Once a bad password has been entered too many times, the service will lock out your account. This setting determines how long the lockout continues. A long lockout time can be a problem for you if you accidentally mistype or forget your password too many times consecutively. A short time can give an unauthorised user more attempts to guess the password sooner.
Total incorrect logins
The field shows the total (not just consecutive) number of incorrect logins done so far.
Locale Settings
Locale includes settings involving geographical region, language, and other local conventions. These are made in the locale section of the tab. All the selection fields are drop-down lists.
The fields are as follows:
Language
Set your language and the local variant.
Time zone
Set the time zone for your region. Time zones are often identified by cities in particular countries, as a single country can span multiple time zones. The list is ordered by the current time zones (corrected by Daylight Saving Time).
Time zone applies to message timestamps and shared data such as calendars, which are always shown in the current local time zone of the user. This settings only applies to the portal, not the devices; the time zone of the devices can be different from that of the portal.
Notice that the time zone value includes Daylight Saving Time if it is currently applicable for the zone. Hence, for example GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is always +00:00, while GB (BST) is either +00:00 or +01:00 depending on the time of the year.
Name policy
Set the name order policy in which order your first and last names should be displayed, and whether the last name should be capitalised.
Login Information
This section shows various information about your previous logins. If an unauthorised person has used your account without your knowledge, the information here may reveal such occurrence and even the identity of the person.
The information fields are as follows:
Last login time
Time of the last login. This is for your current session.
Last login address
The IP address of the last login. This is again for your current session.
Previous login time
Time of the previous login. You can check this time to see if there was a login at a time when you yourself did not do so.
Previous login address
The IP address of the last login. This typically matches the Last login address if you logged in from the same computer or device, but not necessarily, as they sometimes change. Many organisations have a single IP address, which does not identify the computer or device. If the previous login was made by an unauthorised user, the address may identify his or her computer or device, a residence, or organisation.
